Classic Colors: Dick Bruna

Print this page Print this page

Dick Bruna is best known for his children's books which he authored and illustrated, now numbering over 200. His best known creation is Miffy (Nijntje in the original Dutch), a small rabbit drawn with heavy graphic lines, simple shapes and primary colors.

Aside from his prolific catalog of children's books, Bruna also illustrated and designed book covers, posters and promotional materials for his father's publishing company A.W. Bruna and Zoon. His most popular designs graced the covers of the Zwarte Beertjes series of books.

Children's Books

Miffy is a small female rabbit in a series of picture books drawn and written by Dutch artist Dick Bruna. Her original Dutch name is Nijntje [nɛɪ̯ncǝ] which stems from a toddler's pronunciation of the word "konijntje" meaning "little rabbit".

The first Miffy book was produced in 1955, and almost 30 others have followed. In total they have sold over 85 million copies, and inspired a television series as well as items such as clothes and toys featuring the character.

The Colors Of Shorebreak By Clark Little

Print this page Print this page

I know we had a colorful look at waves not too long ago (see it here), but when I came across the shorebreak photography of Clark Little I couldn't resist sharing the incredible palettes created by a mix of sand, shore and water.  All of these photos can be seen on his site, and are part of his latest book, The Shorebreak Art of Clark Little.

The Colors Of Emmett Kerrigan

"His recent paintings readily recall aerial landscapes. The meticulously applied layers of color reflect a deep appreciation for the way the land carries a memory of its previous self."

"Patchwork like spaces of unequal area are simplified and assembled to heighten the relevance of value, line and most importantly color."

Emmett Kerrigan works and lives in Chicago, IL.

1920's CTA Transit Posters

Print this page Print this page

During the 1920s, the Chicago Rapid Transit Company commissioned the city's finest graphic artists to produce advertising posters that encouraged Chicagoans to use rapid transit for more than commuting to work. The images produced beckoned Chicagoans to the city's parks, museums and other urban spots, as well as to more bucolic destinations beyond the city limits. Curiously, almost none of the posters actually featured the "L"TM itself, only scenic views of the destinations. Although there seem to be no records of precisely how many posters were produced, what they advertised, and what images they consisted of, researchers think approximately 160 posters were produced for the Insull lines between 1921 and 1929. - chicago-l.org

Color Seen Through The Microscope

Print this page Print this page

Started in 1974, the Nikon Small World Competition has been recognizing excellence in photography through the microscope.

"A photomicrograph is a technical document that can be of great significance to science or industry. But a good photomicrograph is also an image whose structure, color, composition, and content is an object of beauty, open to several levels of comprehension and appreciation."

Today, we're taking a look at a selection of palettes from the top photos in the 2009 competition.

A Journey Around the Skull, which inspired a previous post, recommended checking out the textile blog Dots and Lines are Just Fine, and though just getting started with their collection, they still had plenty of inspiring palettes.

Some Interesting Color Coincidences

One of my favorite things to watch is the interesting coincidences that pop up when you have people from all over the world naming colors and putting them in palettes.  Some fun stuff in there... go have a look and laugh.

What Do We Do With So Many Palettes?

Ok, so that's a lot of color... We're working hard on the code for Version 4 of COLOURlovers that will make it easier to find the color inspiration you're looking for, to share your color ideas with others and to make even more palettes.

Make Something Awesomely Colorful!

We have an API... Who knows what awesome stuff you might build with access to 1 million palettes.  Some things that have already been built:

Your Palettes... Your Stories: Share Why You Create

In the comments below, share a bit of your story with us.  I'd love to hear your answers to these questions. (They might help us explain to new lovers just why this place is so great.)
Why do you create palettes?

What do you like about it?

If you use palettes from COLOURlovers, what for?

What makes COLOURlovers such a great creative community?

Thank you all so much.  I'm looking forward to the next million, 10 million... and every other colorful milestone we'll reach together.

+Darius (COLOURlover)
